Letter to Nathan Freeman and Isaac Brackett, Alfred, Maine: "The Court have decided the Richardson case in your favor. ... The decision amounts to this, that where the deacons are parties in a cause in their private capacity, not necessarily involving the common property, any members of the family are witnesses without release, and that the common property, which they hold under the covenant, cannot be taken to satisfy any private debts of the persons holding it."
